I'm back. :-) I needed some extra training. So, I went to a Board and Train facility for four weeks and came back to my foster home with great skills. (Thank you, LEARN, for giving me that opportunity.) My foster family now walks me with a Halti collar, which has dramatically reduced my pulling. I like really long walks multiple times per day. I'm still reactive to other animals while on a leash and when riding in the car. However, when given clear and consistent correction I will continue on without incident. The Trainer said it is critical that my adoptive family set clear and consistent guidelines for me and continue with my training. I knows sit, stay, down, heel and leave it. I need my ears cleaned frequently and now sit nicely to have them cleaned but it isn't my favorite activity. [By the way, the spot on my ear has almost completely disappeared. :-)] My foster family says I am an incredibly sweet dog who really just wants to be petted and loved.
The consensus is that I am around 3 years old, but there really isn't any way to know for sure. I like to play like a puppy, but, topping 100 lbs, I'm definitely full grown. I like to be outside, but I may not need a fence. I prefer long walks with my human.
If you love BIG dogs, are looking for a walking companion and are up for the challenge of ongoing training then I might be the boy for you! If you're interested in meeting me and have already been approved to adopt, please email LabMatch. Otherwise, please complete LEARN's on-line application and have a Home Visit.
10/6/2015 - Dozer here again. I just got back from my neuter. While under anesthesia the Vet recommended that I have a dental done. Now I have sparkly white teeth, The Vet discovered I have a double ear infection and took a biopsy of a spot on the outside flap of my ear. Hopefully everything comes back normal. In the meantime I am taking pain medication (for the neuter) and ear medicine to clear up the infection. I will back to my best soon! If you are interested in adopting me, please contact LEARN and ask to meet me!
9/21/2015 - Hi, my name is Dozer (short for Bulldozer). I am a big guy with lots of love to give. I am very friendly and love everyone. I am curious about my foster dog and cat, but I leave them alone. I love my foster siblings - one is 8 years old and one is 9 years old. I probably wouldn't be a good fit for infants or toddlers because I would knock them over without meaning any harm.
I came to LEARN as a stray. A really nice lady knew about LEARN and was able to get me into a foster home. I likely wasn't an indoor dog but am learning very quickly how to live this grand lifestyle. Initially I had a lot of difficulty walking on slick floors (wood, tile, etc.) but after a couple of days I have it figured out. When my foster parents are home I have free roam of the house, and I haven't had any accidents since my first day. I don't know if I would call them "accidents" because I am an intact male. . . I wanted my presence known. I quickly learned that my foster family doesn't appreciate my claiming stake on the house. With firm but gentle correction I stopped doing that. I enjoy spending time outside, but you probably should know that I am a bit of a Houdini. I can wrestle my way out of a collar, and I am so close to getting out of a harness. My foster mom thinks she can just tighten those things, but she doesn't know how good I am. I would do best with a family with a yard and tall fence.
I don't really know how big I am, and I like to sit on your lap while you pet me. It usually works best if you join me on the floor to pet me. I usually will lie right next to you so you can work your magic. If you sit on the couch I can be pretty sneaky. Well, as sneaky as a 100 pound dog can be I guess. If you let me put one paw on your lap it is a matter of seconds before I am sitting on your lap. I am learning to stop doing that because it just isn't a good idea. I am crated at night and during the day while my foster family gets to know me better. They tried to let me sleep in their bedroom with my own dog bed, but I was much more interested in pacing and exploring than sleeping. We will keep working on it. I am very comfortable in my crate and don't make a peep. Actually I am not a vocal boy at all. I am learning to walk on a leash. This will take some time because I am really, really excited to explore with my nose. I pull really hard because I really don't have a clue about how big I am. My foster mom is working on leash training, and I am already doing better. I seem to enjoy learning new things - so they are starting to teach me more important dog skills. But you know, I am really just a great big sweetie and quite handsome if I do say so myself. The vet thinks I am about two years old but no older than three. I still have a lot of puppy behavior in me so whoever adopts me needs to have lots of energy and enjoy exercising outside. Oh, one last thing: It is very important that whoever adopts me can follow through with training. I seem to like having clear expectations and having a confident leader in my owner.
