Owner surrender

Hi, my name is Dexter.  I came to LEARN and my foster family on September 6, 2014.  My family surrendered me because they could no longer afford my vet bills.  It was suspected through lots of testing that I had allergies (to everything under the sun!) that resulted in sores on my body, sensitive paws, hair loss, and constant ear infections.  I was taking all kinds of medications, prednisone, and allergy shots.  I did not look good or feel good.  My foster mom did not believe I was a pure bred lab, even though I have papers to prove it.  It was even said (in front of me) that I was a “pure bred, but not well bred.”

My foster family immediately put me on a no-grain diet with quality dog food and a daily dose of coconut oil.  They never gave me any medicine or shots.  Once I started showing my foster family I was feeling better, they added a tablespoon of low sugar Greek yogurt to my daily grind.

When I first went to my foster home, they would take me on walks with their other dogs, but I would not do well.  My paws were so sensitive from my “allergies,” my foster dad wouldn’t even cut my nails.  In fact, I wouldn’t even let them touch them!  And don’t even ask me to “shake.”

My foster parents would rub coconut oil on my sores.  My foster dad brushed me every day and also kept an eye on my ears.

After a week, visitors said I already looked so much better.  My sores were healing and my hair started growing back.  My paws started to feel better so I got to go for a very short walk, and I mean short!

As time has passed and I just kept feeling better and I was getting healthier (obviously!  Look at how great I look!), my walks started getting longer.

It’s been six weeks since I came to my foster home, and not only do I feel like a new dog, I am a new dog.  My sores are all but healed and I have a beautiful coat.  The coconut oil makes me really soft. I am so happy I can’t help but show it.  My tail wags uncontrollably.  Visitors who have not seen me since I first came to my foster home can’t believe how good I look.  In fact, my foster family can’t believe how great I feel!  Did I mention that I am so happy!?  I love going for long walks and playing fetch.   I’ll play as long as you will!

I have two younger foster dog siblings, a female and male Lab puppy.  I can now keep up with them because I feel so good.  We love to play together.

I know my basic commands like come, sit, and stay.  They are teaching me to “leave” and because I now let them touch my paws, I’m trying to learn to “shake.”   I am crate trained and really don’t mind it, but my foster parents let me have run of the house 24/7 because I am such a good boy and I don’t bother their things.

P.S.  My foster mom tells me I’m handsome and believes me now that I’m a pure bred, beautifully bred lab.
