I've been adopted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last Saturday was a great day. My new Mom Anne took me home. She said there was a few surprises for me there. I got to meet her children and grandchildren and we all got to swim in the pool. Yes, she has a pool. I have been swimming and going for a walk everyday. Life is grand.

June 2012  Well I had my first birthday yesterday!! You have no idea how lucky I am to be part of L.E.A.R.N and getting to have a first birthday. I got to go swimming and we played a new game in the pool - I won.  There is now a video of me in the pool - check it out. We swim at Dog Paddle Beach in Loves Park, IL.

A few weeks ago I got to go stay with Dorothy, another foster Mom. She owns a store where they sell cool stuff for dogs, cats, and other animals. It is called Nature's Feed. Dorothy let me come to the store where I was a very good boy. I didn't shoplift any of the treats that are on the shelves. I got to meet the customers and enjoyed every minute of it.

May 2012    Hey everyone -  how are you all? I just wanted to update you on a few things. The past few weeks have been pretty busy for me. I have been to several vets for an evaluation of my hip dysplasia. Some good news – I don’t need surgery right now. My foster Mom and I got to meet Dr. Muir at the UW Vet School in Madison. They said that I could actually get a little better as I continue to mature. This is the case for some dogs up until they are about 14 months old. I am only ten months old.  Some suggestions for my care going forward are: having a grain-free diet because corn based foods can cause inflammation which would be bad for me, get low impact exercise like swimming and walking and to take pain medication only as needed and to lose a few pounds. Having any extra weight is very hard on a dog with hip dysplasia.

So I have been swimming – that was really cool. This nice guy helped me into the pool and went back and forth with me until I got used to it. I was a little scared at first so I splashed and splashed – guess my dog paddle stroke needs some work. I am scheduled to go swimming once per week. Also, my foster Mom has been working with me and teaching me how to walk nicely on a leash. I really like going for walks.

I have stopped taking both of the pain meds I was taking and I feel fine. I have some just in case I have a bad day.

So what does the future hold for me? Well, like I said above it is very important that I keep my weight down and get low impact exercise. Other than that I am just your regular loving lab. We can manage my pain should I have any with medicine. Someday it might be necessary for me to have surgery on my hips. But there is no way of knowing when that might be or if I will need surgery.

I love being my foster Mom’s buddy and giving her lots of kisses. I love riding in the car and want to go with her any chance I get. I love my foster brother because he plays with me. Felix the cat even lets me play with him.  I would really love to find my new forever home and get settled in in time for summer and maybe some swimming in the lake with you.

MEDICAL HOLD

Hi Everyone,

My name is Buck. I am a typical, young male lab. I am goofy and fun to have around. I love to play with my foster brother especially tug of war. He lets me pull him across the room. I also like to play fetch.

Recently I got to go with my foster Mom to rescue another lab. I got to ride in the car for a long time. I also got to go to a dog food store and meet some new friends of L.E.A.R.N.. I rode very nicely and it was fun. Now every time I get by the car I beg to get in and go for a ride. My Mom tells me we get to go later this week because I get to go swimming and take a trip to the vet.

Some other good things about me is that I love my crate and will stay in there while you are at work and even will sleep in there at night. I have been given free reign of the house sometimes and have been a good boy. I did get into a little trouble the other day because I tore up a magazine and ate some toilet paper. I really like paper. My Mom says we will work on learning that I have to leave it alone. I have other stuff to learn too like how to walk properly on a leash.

One more thing I have to tell you. I have hip dysplasia. L.E.A.R.N. is going to take me to the vet to see what my options are and how to best take care of me. That is part of why I get to go swimming it will help me build muscle in my rear legs. We'll keep everyone posted on my progress.

Love,

Buck    aka Buckwheat
