11/1/2021 - Hello, Derby here! I was recently rescued by LEARN and my foster mom. It was just a few short weeks after my first birthday and I couldn't have asked for a better gift! I've never known what human love was like - but, oh boy, am I learning fast! My foster mom tells me I impress her everyday and that I'm a very special, smart boy. The first day I arrived, I was a little unsure about my new surroundings but approached my foster mom with a wagging tail. Within just a few short days, I settled right in.

Even though I'm only a little over a year old, I don't have the energy level of a normal pup. I really enjoy my naps and more importantly, snuggling close with my foster mom. I do love when I can join her and my foster brother on a daily walk. Whenever she gets out my harness, my tail tells her I'm ready to go! Sometimes people ask if they can pet me on our walks and when my foster mom allows it, she tells me it warms her heart when I approach with a wagging tail, welcoming the pets and compliments. 

I'm very gentle and quiet. In the time I've been here, I've only barked a couple times, but my foster mom said they barely count. The only time I make much noise is when I need to go outside and for the first few minutes while I'm in my kennel when she's gone.

I'm still learning basic commands. I will lay down when told. I don't know how to "sit" on command but I'm eager to learn and my foster mom says she can see the wheels turning in my head and am so close. 

Even though my past tells me not to trust humans, I can finally see why so many dogs stay with them! I'm still timid about new experiences, but after positive rewards and consistency, I feel much better. For example, I used to be afraid to go upstairs to my foster mom's bed, but now I'm the one leading the way when it's time to go to sleep!

If you're looking for a loyal, gentle young pup, I'm your guy! It may take a couple days for me to warm up, but I promise in return, I'll give you my complete trust, loyalty and love.
