Hello Everyone, Just wanted to let you know that my stitches have come out and I am feeling much better but I still have a 2 week rest period ahead of me. I have had a lot of interest from people wanting to adopt me and I want to say thank you! But I am only 1 boy who only needs 1 family, so please don't be disappointed if you don't get to meet me. There are other dogs that need a forever home that I hope you will consider!!! Update 3-29-2020: Good news! The plate in my front leg has been removed. I've included a picture so you can see how big it was. I need to be kept quiet for the next two weeks to allow my incision to heal. After that, I should be better than ever. Update 3-6-2020: Hi there, First, a big thank you to everyone who donated toward my surgery. It's scheduled for later in March. :-) In my first post, I forgot to tell you that I'm housebroken and crate-trained. In fact, I sleep very well in my crate all night long. I'm pretty good in the house, only getting in trouble when I want exercise or want attention. I'm learning that stealing slippers, socks, shoes, etc. does not get me attention. So, I'm getting better at that. BUT, I'm still a puppy in many, many ways. So, I'm also crated when I'm alone, and I do pretty well with that, too. I'm also doing better with my mouthiness, only doing it when I'm excited or over-tired. I alert my foster family to any unusual noises (which were many when I first arrived) and activity. Recently my foster mom set out a new-to-me dog bed, but I didn't see her put it out. When I discovered it, I barked and barked and barked . . . until my foster mom showed me that it's a dog bed. (In fairness, it's not like the other dog beds here; it's fluffy like a pillow.) Then, I immediately stopped barking. Now that bed is in my crate . . . it's so comfortable! This week there were men working in the park behind my foster home. Of course I alerted my foster family to them, but as soon as I realized they weren't concerned, I stopped barking. In fact, I even took a nap. I still need lots of work on jumping and outside training. (I'm very easily distracted by everything - planes flying overhead, children playing, dogs in their yards, blowing leaves, rabbit scents . .everything!) I'm beginning to realize that life is not all play; there are rules and expectations for me. My foster parents say I'm a work-in-progress. My forever family will need to continue my training. Remember, I'm a big boy. I also will need structure and consistently applied rules in order for me to be the great companion I know I can be. Bear/Beau
2-21-2020: I am a 2 year old, purebred Lab who by everyone's account is absolutely gorgeous. I'm a large boy, tipping the scale at 100+, but my foster home is working to get me down to 85 or 90lbs with a combination of diet and exercise. I was surrendered to a shelter because a child in my last family developed allergies. The shelter said I was high energy, but my foster family disagrees. With a few walks every day, I settle in very nicely. I walk very nicely with an Easy Walk harness. I am a real love bug - I give very gentle kisses and really enjoy laying on laps. [I obviously don't realize how much I weigh. ;-0 ] My foster mom says I'm a 6 month old puppy in a large dog's body. I'm curious about everything. I also get mouthy when I get excited. My foster parents are working on that. They said I need structure, and I need to learn manners. In just the few days I've been here, I've already gotten much better. They are also working on teaching me not to jump and teaching me lots of words, like "leave it," "stay," and "drop." They think I'm extremely smart - I learned "lie down" in one lesson! I'm reportedly very good with children and other dogs. I have not been around cats. I love playing fetch, but the Vet said I should hold off on that for now. You see, when I was a puppy, I broke my right front leg in two places. A metal plate was inserted during one of the two surgeries I had to fix it. That metal plate is now sticking away from the bone (see picture) and causing me some pain. Since the fractures have healed very nicely, I no longer need the plate. So LEARN decided I should have surgery to have that plate removed. Isn't that so nice of them?! If you'd like to help defray the cost of that surgery, that also would be very nice. My foster family doesn't think my name suits me very well. They think more appropriate names are Herbie (because I'm such a love bug), Moose (because of my size), Olaf (because I'm an oaf - although in my defense, I'm not clumsy at all and never knock anything over) and Beau (because I'm so handsome).
